Cognitive disorders are medical disorders that compromise the brain's ability to function. The two common cognitive disorders are dementia and delirium. Both of them affect the thinking. In the case of dementia, the deficits affect the attention, memory, language, and problem solving. Delirium is characterized by confusion, hallucinations and delusions, impaired attention, and changes in the arousal state. The treatment of such conditions must address the underlying medical cause and is usually very complex. A comprehensive medical and psychological history, including the mental state evaluation is imperative to a proper diagnostic. Batteries of neuropsychological tests can clarify symptoms to get an accurate diagnosis.
